I remember when I had bread pakoda for the first time. It was in the Vaishnao Devi Temple, right after a really long climb. The hot pakoda against the cold wind and a tiring journey was so blissful. Hence, bread pakodas have always held a special place in my heart. Now we live in Chennai, and its hard to come across bread pakodas that commonly. So, I thought why not make it myself just like I made Onion Samosa. But, I did not do it the traditional way (of deep frying them). instead, I roasted them on a tawa, and they tasted great. Greater even, because I felt lighter without so much oil in my food. And the best thing is, you wouldn’t notice the difference at all. Make sure that you do the smallest things perfectly, like getting the ingredients choppychoppy, and roasting time correct.

In one of his tenure in Delhi, my husband was staying in Subhash Nagar area along with his colleague. There is a famous Bread Pakoda shop in that area. He has seen people standing in long queues before the shop in the evenings to buy this item. It is served by them with chutney. However the taste is so divine that you don’t need any side item to eat that Pakoda. Just check this video for it

Bread pakodas are fried bread slices that usually have a potato filling. They are fried in a thick batter of gram flour and served hot with chutneys or sauce. In this recipe, I have toasted it on a tawa, instead of frying them. Its easy to make, and it tastes great for an evening snack.

  1. Traditionally, bread pakodas are fried. But I am toasting it on a tawa in order to make it less oily. However, if you wish to deep fry them, you can. They taste amazing either way.
  2. While placing the filling, you can also add any other ingredient of your choice. I like to add a few pieces of Lays to give the bread pakoda a surprising crunch.
