KADALA (BLACK CHICKPEAS) CURRY

It is a famous and delicious dish from the state of Kerala in India.Its most commonly served with Puttu. However, this goes well with rice as well as Chapathi. This dish can also be served with Idli, Dosa or Appam. The dish is delectable and so aromatic that it lingers on your hands for a long time.

Materials

  • 1 cup Black chickpeas soaked overnight or for minimum 8 hours

For Masala Paste

  • 1 inch Cinnamon
  • 2 Cardamom
  • 2 Cloves
  • 1 tsp Saunf (Fennel seeds)
  • 1 Green chilli
  • 1 inch Ginger chopped
  • 1 Big Onion chopped
  • 2 Big tomato chopped
  • 1/4 Cup Grated coconut
  • 1 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 tsp Coriander Powder
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp Garam masala powder
  • 1 tsp Oil

For the gravy

  • 10 Small onions
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  • Salt to taste
  • Curry leaves
  • 1 tsp Oil

Instructions

  • Pressure cook the chickpeas with little salt and enough water for 5 to 6 whistles. Chickpeas should be well cooked. Don't discard the water

Making the Masala Paste

  • Take oil in a kadai.

  • Add the wholespices – cinnamon, cardamom and cloves.

  • Saute the spices until the aroma fills the air.

  • Add Saunf (Fennel seeds) and allow it to splutter.

  • Add green chilli and ginger.

  • Add onion and stir till it turns translucent.

  • Add the chopped tomatoes and saute till they turn soft.

  • Add grated coconut.

  • Add all the spice powders (chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder and garam masala powder). Add salt and saute till everything is well cooked. Cool it and grind it to a smooth paste adding little water.

For making Gravy

  • Take oil in a kadai.

  • Add mustard and curry leaves.

  • Add the small onions and saute till they turn a light golden brown.

  • Add the ground masala paste and cook well for 5 minutes in medium flame.

  • Add the cooked chickpeas. Add required amount of Water to reach the desired consistency. Use the same water in which chickpeas were boiled as this gives more colour and flavour.

  • Cook the gravy for 8 to 10 minutes.

  • Now the kadala curry is ready to be served. Serve it along with puttu or rice.

Notes

  1. If you are preparing kadala curry for puttu the gravy can be little more watery and spicy.
