Manathakkali is a herbal plant very famous in South India. We call it as Black Nightshade in English. In South India, they consume the leaves and berries are routinely as food. “Fragrant tomato” is the other name for the berries of this palnt. You can use the leaves of this plant to treat mouth ulcers and gastric ulcer. The manathakkali soup prepared by using the leaves of this plant can be a good appetizer and they are also effective relief for mouth ulcers. Click here to check that recipe. We have a small garden in our terrace. Here we have got three or four plants of this manathakkali keerai. We have not purposefully planted this. They have grown automatically. Therefore we are regularly getting the supply of this keerai without even getting out of the house. Once in ten days we harvest this keerai to prepare some kind of recipe. My daughter usually doesn’t like this keerai. However when I prepared and served this soup, she has started liking this soup

Materials

  • 2 Number Medium Onion or 1 large onion or 8 to 10 sambhar onions finely chopped or crushed
  • 6 Number Garlic cloves finely chopped
  • 1 inch Ginger finely chopped
  • 1 Number Big tomato finely chopped
  • 2 Cups Manathkkali leaves well cleaned
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp Pepper corns
  • 1/4 tsp Jeera
  • 1/4 tsp coriander seeds
  • 1/4 tsp Saunf (Fennel seeds)

Instructions

  • Crush the Pepper corns, jeera, coriander seeds and saunf into a coarse powder

  • Take six cups of water in a vessel and add the chopped onions and garlic and let it boil

  • Add the ground mixture of pepper,jeera,coriander and saunf and let it boil for one minute

  • Now add the manathakkali leaves

  • Now add salt and boil the mixture till the leaves are cooked. Now the soup is ready and serve it in a serving bowl
